On Saturday, May 14th, the biggest airline in the United Arab Emirates, Emirates Airlines announced that they plan to start accepting Bitcoin as a mode of payment. The airlines’ chief operating officer (COO), Adel Ahmed Al-Redha made the announcement during a media gathering at the Arabian Travel Market and stated that passengers will soon be able to purchase plane tickets using Bitcoin.

Al-Redha said that this move will be done to innovate digital technologies and allow them to further connect with their passengers and customers. The COO added that the blockchain technology used in cryptocurrency can be proven useful in tracking records of each aircraft in their airline.

Although there wasn’t a specific date stated when these new features would be available, Al-Redha disclosed that they will be focusing on recruiting employees who will be in charge of managing crypto payments, blockchain tracking Metaverse and NFT projects.

Additionally, Al Redha stated that incorporating blockchain technology into the airline is part of the carrier’s strategy to monitor their customers’ needs. Aside from that, it aims to make processes on its website such as making website sales, operations and training more interactive.

Aside from allowing passengers to use Bitcoin to buy plane tickets, part of Emirates Airlines’ plan is to enter the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) world. According to the same announcement, the airline is looking to make different NFT artworks tradeable on their website. This embracement of new technology is part of Emirates’ strategy to not only expand capabilities with old customers but also to attract new customers.

Moreover, the decision to manage metaverse and NFT projects is another move towards innovation in the digital world as earlier this year, Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), set up its headquarters in the metaverse named MetaHQ.

This is the first time that the airline is engaging with cryptocurrencies and it’s being done to provide more engagement with their customers. It also makes them one of the airlines in the world to accept Bitcoin as a way to buy tickets following Latvian airline airBaltic back in 2014 and Lot Polish Airlines in 2015.
